Welcome to our uniquely South African circus family.
A social and professional circus that is filled with hope, promise, daring dreams, and extraordinary talent.
Come and dream with us…
Zip Zap was born 29 years ago from a simple dream, a trapeze bar in a tree, a costume box and a rusty car. Established by South African born Brent van Rensburg and his French wife, Laurence Estève, their dream was to use the circus as a tool to bridge socio-economic gaps and to inspire and empower young people to build a new culture of peaceful co-existence in South Africa, inspired by the late Nelson Mandela.
As the Zip Zap story was founded on an initial love story between the two co-founders, so it continues to unfold as one. The love can be felt in every corner of this extraordinary social circus. It is felt on stage, on the training floor, throughout eleven programmes and between every beneficiary, alumni, staff, international intern, board member and show audiences. Once you join the Zip Zap family, you are embraced by a sense of belonging, that lasts a lifetime.
Our shining stars
We were blown away with the effort and skill of the youngsters!
The film was a true piece of art. The performances were stunning. The scenery, beautiful. This Film was absolutely tremendous and touching. The skill of the performers and the artistic expression of the film was a true masterpiece. I wanted to share this film with the world.
Amazing cinematography, such talented artists and beautiful telling of the story. So proud!
“We at Cirque du Soleil salute Zip Zap’s remarkable social involvement and community commitment. Zip Zap is living proof that actions speak louder than words and that the sky is the limit. May your activities continue to inspire.”
The Zip Zap Circus is an amazing project that takes young children off the street, affords them the opportunity to develop skills and most importantly, provides them with a sense of purpose and hope for the future. This championing of children is critical to our ability to build a strong, productive, and united society.
Very refreshing show full of energy, style, beauty, poetic and promising.
Zip Zap remote teaching during Covid19 lockdown supported us to cope with the mental, emotional, and physical wellbeing of my child. I am so grateful to all the staff who work tirelessly and put their heart and soul into delivering a program in this anxiety-filled climate and ensuring they over delivered on their mission statement.
We as a family would like to thank the Zip Zap and the eTV Media Covid Relief Fund for thinking of us during this time. It was such an unexpected and wonderful surprise to receive a food parcel. My daughter was so excited about this awesome package. Ever grateful.
It was such a rich experience being immersed in the Zip Zap way. I became aware of the immense coordination, organization and efficacy required to attain the objectives of the organisation. I learnt new teaching methodologies. I was amazed at the potential and strength of the participants that have the chance to empower themselves and in turn have a positive an impact on their families and communities.
We did not expect Zip Zap to continue teaching during lockdown. To my surprise we received personal calls, regular feedback, communication, and videos to keep my 11-year old daughter engaged and connected. My daughter was able to feel less lonely and see her peers through videos they all shared.
Zip Zap helped me a lot with not being afraid, it helped with my shyness. It has given me a dream to live for, a purpose for the future. It has given me friends and a bigger family.
Zip Zap is a home for me. It has changed me. Therefore, through Zip Zap I believe I can also make a change to the next generation. All the youngsters at Zip Zap are my brothers and sisters, that’s why Zip Zap is a home for me.
I think what is being built will endure longer than just the next 16 years. They have created a wonderful legacy.
We received personal phone calls, individual feedback, constant communication and appropriate videos to keep my daughter engaged and connected during Covid19 lockdown. My daughter was able to feel less lonely and see her peers through videos they all shared.
MOYA was as spectacular and intense as the show is under the big tent. Brave!
Zip Zap not only teaches us circus skills, but it also teaches us self-respect and how to respect other people.
I salute your vision and tenacity over the years. You believe in your dream and have overcome so many obstacles. You have continued where so many others would have thrown in the towel. Your new home is so impressive, but what you are doing for young people and for Cape Town and South Africa is what really knocks me out. Take a bow, you deserve a long and standing ovation.
Zip Zap served as a model organisation and has been a source of inspiration throughout my career. I have beautiful memories and it is an experience that I strongly recommend for anyone who wants to see an organisation that lasts in time, thanks to their exceptional achievements; commitment and hard work to fulfil their dreams.
Zip Zap has done a lot for me according to where I come from, and all the difficulties in life. I’m very proud that I’m in Zip Zap.
Zip Zap is a truly remarkable social enterprise that has a special role to play in the economy and community of our province. Their ability to reach and teach young people at the most marginalized, vulnerable, and neglected medical state has been deemed exceptional.
We are dreamcatchers
Beneficiaries from the Zip Zap programmes have performed for presidents, princes, sporting stars and world leaders. They have completed more than 30 international tours and numerous international media showcases. The proceeds from these performances in turn fund training and are pivotal to the sustainability of Southern Africa’s largest social circus.
Kids who began as six-year-olds swinging from a trapeze tied to a tree, are now professional performing artists working in Europe and North America. Young people who grew up on the streets are now skilled and valued artists and technicians in the entertainment and film industries.
Best of all, these kids have become teachers themselves. They are ambassadors and role models for others, demonstrating the possibility of a new way of treating each other.
We are trail blazers
