“Simunye”, formed in 1992, means “we are one”, and is the heart of Zip Zap’s circus school, bringing children from outreach and youth streams together to learn, to create, and to work towards a common goal – namely the best shows possible. Children and youths practice every Friday and Saturday, as well as during school holidays to develop circus acts, participate in outings and learn to repair their equipment. They share meals together, develop new friendships, and learn about teamwork and discipline. An underlying assumption of the programme is that creating and performing shows together, in various venues, creates social cohesion amongst participants. Finally, Simunye is also the reservoir for potential candidates for the D2D programme – a full time vocational training programme offered at Zip Zap.
