It’s been 15 years since Zip Zap took the stage at the largest arts festival on the African continent. Today Zip Zap is back with two productions for the virtual Fringe at the National Arts Festival, which is being hosted entirely online for the first time ever.

Two productions at vFringe at the National Arts Festival

After three months of lockdown, Zip Zap’s professional troupe returned to their beloved training space, the Dome at the Foreshore in Cape Town, under strict health and safety protocols.

With renewed vigour and much anticipation, they created ‘Once Upon a Circus’ an emotive true story told with exquisite aerials, extraordinary acrobatics, and riveting showmanship.

ONCE UPON A CIRCUS

In this imaginative 30-minute production, Once Upon a Circus symbolises the impactful role that the circus arts have played in social cohesion and creating a sense of belonging for those who find themselves on the fringe of society.

It unveils that this little circus in the heart of Cape Town, is in fact, a microcosm of a true ‘Rainbow Nation’ South Africa.

The story reveals the possibility of social transformation and youth empowerment through the circus arts. Trompie, a real member of the Zip Zap circus family, represents the array of youth whose lives have been transformed through their discovery of circus magic, affording them an opportunity to transcend their circumstances.

JOURNEY BEYOND

Journey Beyond – A Symphonic Circus - is an extraordinary artistic collaboration between Zip Zap and the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra originally performed at the Artscape Opera House in 2018.

Viewers can expect a mesmerising musical and visual journey that pushes boundaries and reaches a crescendo of classical entertainment. The captivating beauty of these daring acts are performed in unison with stirring symphonic performances from Dvorak to Shirley Bassey, Vivaldi to Les Misérables.

Anticipate circus daredevils that jump, fly, and soar effortlessly through the air in gravity-defying aerials and spectacular acrobatics. Think of them as Picasso painting with bodies, as Newtown defying gravity, they are ordinary kids doing extraordinary things.

The beauty of these acts are reinforced by the simplicity of the apparel and the crystal voice of Robyn Botha. Watch a sneak peek here

“It is a breath-taking production with world-class circus acts in tandem with a world-class orchestra,” says Dr. Marlene Le Roux, CEO, Artscape Theatre Centre.
The show is under the direction of the charismatic Brandon Phillips, CPO’s resident conductor. “If I have one regret it is that I am facing the wrong way,” says Phillips.
